I started Purplehaze Productions in 2007. After immigrating to the UK in 1984, I spent much of my time with musicians from well known bands, including my then husband?s band, Steadman, with their songs featuring in Movies like Superman The Movie, Joan of Arcadia and Charmed. Being involved in the industry for over 20 years gave me extensive insight into the music industry and what the audiences were looking for. In 1998 I started promoting bands at my club named ?district 6?, which was a great success and drew immense audiences. Moving back to Cape Town in 2004, I opened an original music club called Acoustic Café. Our opening night featured Freshly Ground, I subsequently organised their first international tour through my UK agents. Some of the biggest names in SA music played at my venue, including Chris Chameleon, Fokofpolisiekar, Dirty Skirts, Cassette, Bed on Bricks, Steve Newman, Syd Kitchen, Nibs van der Spuy and Ezra. On her tour from the USA, Karma of Henry Ate played both her SA gigs at Acoustic Café. Over the past years I have built up a solid and respected reputation in the SA music industry. Purplehaze Productions was started in 2007 to utilise the contacts I had in the UK to bring international bands to SA. Our launch in April/May 2009 was a hugely successful tour with the iconic Linton Kwesi Johnson/LKJ and his spectacular band, The Dennis Bovell Dub Band, playing at Johannesburg, Grahamstown, Cape Town and Durban. All four events were funded with my own capital and organised entirely by myself. Due to the success of the LKJ Tour, Purplehaze Productions have been highly recommended to international bands that are household names. Hosting international bands also provides us with the opportunity to hold Music Workshops for less advantaged SA youths, giving them the opportunity to learn to play an instrument or use their voice. This idea was founded in conjunction with Johnny Taylor, known as Johnny T, one of the most highly rated violinists in the world. Being raised in the slums of a London council estate, with a difficult family background, he has a unique perspective on how music can change lives. Johnny T has since performed with the most highly acclaimed musicians around the world. If we don?t look after the children who will hold the future? Through obtaining sponsorship for future events, Purplehaze Productions will be able to showcase spectacular music events across SA, providing a continuous flow of top artists at an affordable price. We are one of the only independent promoters and offer a wide variety of music to suit all preferences. Our passion for music will shake up the industry and raise the standard demanded from SA audiences. South African?s are hungry for music with more flavour and, with funding and support from sponsors with vision; we are ready to provide it.
